Understanding the difference
Made for your window, or made for most windows?
A calm, honest look at what separates bespoke window textiles from standard retail options — so you can decide what suits your home.
Back to HomeWhy the comparison matters
Most people buying curtains or blinds for the first time approach it as a straightforward retail purchase — something to pick up from a home goods store or order online in a standard size. That works for many situations. But there are cases where it falls short, and those gaps tend to become apparent only after the curtains are already hanging.
We are not in the business of suggesting that a made-to-measure service is the right answer for everyone. Some rooms, some budgets, and some timelines are better served by off-the-shelf solutions. What we want to offer here is a clear picture of where the differences actually lie, so that whatever you choose, you are choosing it knowingly.
The sections below cover the most common areas where the two approaches diverge — not as a sales argument, but as a reference.
Traditional vs Our Approach
A straightforward look at how the two approaches differ across the areas that matter most to homeowners.
Standard Retail
Shadow Weave Vault
Standard Retail
Standard widths and drop lengths are made to cover the most common window sizes. Unusual proportions, bay windows, or sloped ceilings usually require alterations or workarounds that compromise the finish.
Shadow Weave Vault
Every curtain and blind is cut to the exact dimensions of your window. We measure on-site and account for the specific characteristics of your space — including wall returns, reveals, and architrave details.
Standard Retail
Selection is determined by what the retailer has chosen to stock. Colours and textures reflect broad trends rather than your room's specific palette. Lining options are usually limited to blackout or unlined.
Shadow Weave Vault
We bring samples to your home and work through options together, taking into account your existing furnishings, the quality of light, and how each fabric performs at different times of day. Lining, interlining, and thermal options are all available.
Standard Retail
Installation is typically the buyer's responsibility. This means sourcing track or pole hardware separately, drilling into walls, and adjusting the hanging height by trial and error.
Shadow Weave Vault
Hanging is included as part of every service. We bring all necessary hardware, work cleanly, and take away any packaging. Before we leave, we check the drape, alignment, and operation until everything is right.
Standard Retail
Off-the-shelf curtains and blinds can be taken home or delivered within days. For some situations — a new rental, a temporary fix — this speed is a genuine advantage.

Made-to-measure orders take one to three weeks depending on the service. The consultation visit, production time, and installation are each scheduled at your convenience. We keep you informed throughout.
Standard Retail
Product descriptions and sizing guides are available, but the decision is largely left to the buyer. Returns policies vary and are not always straightforward when products have been cut or altered.
Shadow Weave Vault
From the first visit to the final installation, we are available to answer questions and offer our honest view. We would rather you choose something you are genuinely happy with than make a hasty decision in a showroom.
What shapes our approach
We see your room, not a size chart
Every consultation begins in your home. We bring the samples to you and assess how fabric behaves in your actual light, not under a showroom ceiling.
No pressure at any stage
We leave samples with you, answer follow-up questions, and wait until you feel settled on a choice. The timeline is yours to set.
Workshop made in Nagoya
All our curtains and blinds are produced locally. That means we can control quality directly and address any issue without passing it back to a distant supplier.
What the results tend to look like
These are the practical outcomes that tend to differ most noticeably between the two approaches over time.
Common outcomes from standard retail
-
Visible gaps at the sides or pooling fabric at the bottom due to imprecise sizing
-
Colours that looked right in the shop but appear different once home under natural light
-
Tracks or rails that are difficult to align correctly without professional tools
-
Fabric that wears or fades faster than expected, particularly in south-facing rooms
Common outcomes from our service
-
A precise fit that covers the window without gap, bunching, or awkward hemlines
-
Fabric chosen in the actual conditions of your room, so the colour and texture land as intended
-
Clean, level installation handled from start to finish with no work left to you
-
Fabric selected for durability in your specific light conditions and room use
On the question of cost
A made-to-measure service costs more than a standard retail purchase at the point of buying. That is straightforward and we would not suggest otherwise. The more useful comparison is what each option looks like over a longer period.
Off-the-shelf curtains and blinds, when they do not fit properly or wear poorly, tend to be replaced within a few years. A well-made curtain using quality fabric, hung correctly, can last considerably longer — and can often be re-lined or re-made rather than replaced entirely.
Our consultation service also starts at ¥12,000, which gives you a complete picture of your options and a set of written recommendations with no obligation to proceed. Some people find that useful simply as a way of understanding what they are looking for before going to a retailer.

What the experience feels like
Buying from a retailer
You visit a shop or browse online, narrow down by available size and colour, and order or take home what seems closest to what you need. The decision is largely yours to make alone, often without having seen the fabric in your room's light. If something does not work, returning or exchanging can be complicated once curtains have been opened or cut.
For straightforward windows and modest budgets this can be a perfectly reasonable path. The limitation shows most when windows are unusual, rooms have strong existing palettes, or the finish matters a great deal to you.
Working with Shadow Weave Vault
We begin with a visit to your home, which takes about an hour. We bring a selection of fabric samples and talk through what you are hoping the room will feel like once the curtains or blinds are in place. There is no obligation at the end of that first visit.
Once you decide to proceed, we handle everything: production, hardware, and installation. We aim for the process to require as little of your time and attention as possible, while keeping you informed at each stage.
Lasting results vs frequent replacement
One aspect of the comparison that does not always come up in product descriptions is how each type of curtain or blind performs several years into use. Standard retail products are generally designed to a price point, which influences both the fabric quality and the construction of headings, linings, and operating mechanisms.
We source fabrics that are tested for light-fastness and chosen partly based on how they behave under the particular sun exposure of your windows. South-facing rooms in Nagoya receive quite direct light for much of the year, and a fabric that looks good in a showroom may fade noticeably within two summers if it is not suited to that exposure.
This is not to suggest that retail options are without value — for rental homes, short-term situations, or windows that are not central to a room's character, they make complete sense. The point is simply that the lifespan comparison, when considered alongside the cost, often looks different from what the initial price tags suggest.
A few things worth clarifying
"Made-to-measure means waiting months"
Most of our orders are completed within one to three weeks. The consultation is typically one visit, and we work to a schedule that suits you rather than a generic lead time.
"A bespoke service is only for larger projects"
We work on single windows as readily as whole apartments. A drapery consultation can be useful even if you eventually buy from a retailer — sometimes the value is simply knowing what to look for.
"The fabric choice will be overwhelming"
We bring a curated selection suited to your situation, not a full catalogue. The conversation is guided, and we will tell you clearly which options we think will work well and why.
"I need to have everything decided before I contact you"
Many of our clients get in touch when they are still unsure what they want. The first conversation is as much about helping you understand your options as it is about taking a brief.
When a made-to-measure service makes sense
There is no single answer to which approach is right. But the cases where a custom service tends to be the more sensible choice share some common characteristics.
Your windows are non-standard in size, shape, or proportion — bay windows, tall windows in older buildings, or recessed frames with unusual reveal depths
The room has a specific character or palette that matters to you and that standard options have not quite matched
Light control is important — whether that means full blackout in a bedroom, gentle filtering in a living room, or a combination in a home office
You would rather not manage the process yourself — the measuring, hardware sourcing, and fitting — and prefer to hand it to someone who will handle it cleanly
Not sure which approach fits your situation?
We are happy to talk it through without any pressure to proceed. A short conversation is often all it takes to get a clearer sense of what would actually serve your home.
